Jungle House, Matapalo Beach Costa Rica : a west coast beach resort of Costa Rica

What is the road like to Matapalo and do I need 4 wheel drive?

The road is in perfect condition up until the airport in Quepos, from there heading further south begins the unpaved section, however it is being maintained by a grater until the Savegre river. From the Savegre to Matapalo is a short distance which will remind all guests that the final road to Paradise is a war against potholes! Another adventure you'll cherish and laugh about for years to come, (but not until it's over and your back home!)
Even though a 4 wheel drive vehicle is recommended (for taking local trips to waterfalls) it is not required to arrive to Matapalo Beach.

Is there a grocery store in the village of Matapalo?

Yes, there are 2, one at the beach(by the public telephone), and another in town which offers a wide range "continental selection" Felipe and his crew will make every effort to find you what you need. He is a charming man from France and speaks English, Spanish and of course French. It's best to buy most of your provisions while still in Quepos or San Isidro if your in a rent a car, then what your missing you can pick up at Felipe's.

How is the water in front of Junglehouse, are there any undertows, or is it dangerous?

The ocean is very safe in front of Junglehouse for two reasons. First, the beach out front is comprised of a very gentle slope which goes way out to sea. One would have to go along way out, to get to a level of depth, which could be dangerous, and it is only dangerous if you ignore the natural signs talking to you. Obviously if you feel at your ankles and shins the pull of the water which is very distinguishable as an undertow, you simply don't go out deeper than your waist.

The second reason Matapalo's beaches are safe is due to our lifeguard program in effect out front. You will see our towers easily as they are painted yellow, and are manned in the high season by qualified and trained Matapalo youth who are all surfers and well acquainted with the ocean and her moods. They have been certified after intense study and physical demands by the National Association of Lifeguards, the equivalent of the Red Cross.

What about the sun and it's effects in Matapalo?

Matapalo is located much closer to the equator than your home, as such the sun rays are much more intense and require skin protection. Please be mindful of this when going into the sun. We have had one too many guest ruin their trip from sunburn at the beginning for lack of precaution. Once your lotions are applied with sun block, feel free to wander all you like.

Is there anything we can bring to Matapalo to donate to the local community?

Absolutely.
Please send an email to communitycharity@junglehouse.com and they will give you an idea of what's most needed. Matapalo is a very poor village and simple things like a used pair of shoes, a soccor ball, or second hand clothing can be a very useful and great gift for someone.

What are the seasons like in Matapalo?

There are only 2 seasons in Costa Rica, the summer from Dec through April when there is literally little or no rainfall and the "Green Season" when the rains begin in May and continue on through November. Don't misunderstand the message though, between May and September there is always either rain in the morning and sun all afternoon or vice versa. It's actually everybody's favorite time to be at the beach.

Is the water in Matapalo Ok to drink?

Yes, or else we would be making tons of money off of you from selling bottled water like the rest of the business community here. One of the principle prerequisites in order to be awarded the "Bandera Azul" or Blue Flag, is that the quality of the drinking water , as well as the ocean water, must be tested. The results showed a 99% purity rating. Actually, maybe we better start bottling the water from it's spring source and selling it outside Matapalo!
